Commercial plumbing systems might need the following types of maintenance services: Drain care can prevent blockages, and it helps ensure that grease traps and drain lines function properly. Restroom disinfection can prevent noxious odors from developing in  drains and sink traps . Water heater and boiler maintenance ensures that these appliances are always in good working order and don’t create problems for your business. Backwater testing prevents pollution of the community's water supply. Commercial buildings usually have a backflow prevention assembly that stops the system's water from flowing back into the public water system. States typically require annual testing of backflow prevention assemblies, and if you fail this test, your company could be hit with a fine. Regular maintenance can help make sure your backflow prevention assembly is up to code. Water tempering can help prevent your employees from getting scalded by hot water by maintaining safe water temperatures. These valves need to be regularly inspected to make sure they're functioning properly.

To work independently, a plumber is required to receive a license. In most states, the prerequisite for earning this license is two to five years of practical experience. There's also an exam to test technical know-how and understanding of plumbing codes. The United Association's website offers extensive information on licensing requirements by state.

In fact, DIYers should take note that it’s a quick fix that will cost you just $5. Plumbing originated during ancient civilizations such as the Greek, Roman, Persian, Indian, and Chinese cities as they developed public baths and needed to provide potable water and wastewater removal, for larger numbers of people.[6] Standardized earthen plumbing pipes with broad flanges making use of asphalt for preventing leakages appeared in the urban settlements of the Indus Valley Civilization by 2700 BC.[7] The Romans used lead pipe inscriptions to prevent water theft. The word "plumber" dates from the Roman Empire.[8] The Latin for lead is plumbum. Roman roofs used lead in conduits and drain pipes[9] and some were also covered with lead. Lead was also used for piping and for making baths.[10]
Present-day water-supply systems use a network of high-pressure pumps, and pipes in buildings are now made of copper,[25] brass, plastic (particularly cross-linked polyethylene called PEX, which is estimated to be used in 60% of single-family homes[26]), or other nontoxic material. Due to its toxicity, most cities moved away from lead water-supply piping by the 1920s in the United States,[27] although lead pipes were approved by national plumbing codes into the 1980s,[28] and lead was used in plumbing solder for drinking water until it was banned in 1986.[27] Drain and vent lines are made of plastic, steel, cast-iron, or lead.[29][30]

Had a plugged drain in my bathroom vanity. Been struggling with small clogs here for the last few months. Finally completely clogged this time. I have an older house, and the plastic trap connects up to a cast iron drain stack. I was struggling to turn the second 90 deg elbow in the cast iron section with my 25' snaked. Called ProDrain to fix the problem. Called at 9am, by 2:30pm I had someone in the door. After 10 mins with the power snake, he got past the problematic elbow (probably the source of the clog) and ensured it was clear all the way to the main stack. Reassembled the trap and showed me how it was hooked up incorrectly during some previous work. Very helpful. Came in right as estimated, which they gave upfront when I asked before scheduling.
"This was quality service above and beyond expectations. The technician clearly explained all work that was done - in fact the technician even took the time to explain my entire plumbing system. This was information that I didn't even receive from the builder - excellent, excellent, excellent service. Received call ahead of technician's arrival and also received a text message. Best money spent on a home service. Will be recommending to many of my neighbors to use his services. Thank you Sergio."
